Chapter One: The Law of The Lid

I am real excited that we have opened the first chapter of this book together. I honestly believe that God has huge plans in store for the lives of each of us in this group.

THE LAW OF THE LID.

"Leadership ability is the lid that determines a person's level of effectiveness." There is a lid to everyone's leadership and that is their ability to lead. You will learn that you possess qualities that other leaders would kill to master that seem easy to you, but you will also learn that there are qualities in those around you that you would love to have yourself.

Two key aspects of leadership are leadership itself and the effectiveness of your leadership. Maxwell gives us a great example of how the law of the lid works in a story of the two men that started the world-famous McDonald's. He shares about how the dedication and desire for success of the McDonald brothers was very high, but the leadership ability was a joke. McDonald's would be a failure if the two brothers hadn't realized an important quality in being a leader, knowing when you have hit your lid. They knew that they could not succeed any longer, so they sold the business to Ray Kroc. His leadership lid was worded perfectly in the book, being referred to as "sky high".

"The higher you want to climb, the more you need leadership. The greater the impact you want to make, the greater your influence needs to be." This quote is very self-explannatory yet many people do not understand it. Nobody is going to be the perfect leader, there will always be something to work on. For those of you that went to SLU 101 in San Antonio, you heard from the Chick-Fil-A speaker that they are always making adjustments to their products and their stores because they have something to work on each time they show up for work. Success without leadership is nothing... but success with leadership can be life-changingly effective.

There are two quotes I would like to leave you guys with:

"Leadership has a multiplying effect... wherever you look, you can find smart, talented, successful people who are able to go only so far because of the limitations of their leadership."

and

"To reach the highest level of effectiveness, you have to raise the lid - one way or another."

Praying for you guys!

God Bless,
Spencer
